the current prognoses of the UITP (the International Association of Public Transport) suggest that around 4000 km of underground railway networks worldwide will be operated under driverless conditions by 2030. Currently, train drivers have been replaced with intelligent driving systems on around 50 underground lines and more than 1000 line kilometres. Fully automated operations have become well-established in underground railways and have shown themselves to be beneficial. The special technical and operating challenges associated with this technology in local and long-distance transport have been investigated in more detail in the current edition of SIGNAL+DRAHT....
