The security aspects pertaining to the implementation of COTS and Open Source software components in critical systems. The use of COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) and Open Source is on the increase across all industries. This is down to increasing competitive pressure and the need to reduce development costs and time, while at the same time gaining an innovative edge over competitors. This article provides an overview of the security aspects, especially the threat of hacker attacks, when using COTS and Open Source software components in critical systems.
