Dear Readers, The EU Commission has released its Third Mobility Package. The Commission’s goal is to use the Mobility Package to help Europe acquire a leading position in the area of road transport automation. Furthermore, a research and development platform similar to Shift2Rail is to be created for road transport, which will see the railways lose yet another advantage. The current edition concerns itself with automation in rail traffic. The “2030 Traffic Prognosis” issued by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure presupposes considerable increases in passenger rail traffic in Germany of ca 20% and goods rail traffic of around 40% in comparison with 2010....
